A landmark Nature study published today finds AI is accelerating fossil fuel production far faster than it advances renewable energy — delivering a net annual emissions increase of 0.47 to 1.8 gigatonnes, or roughly 1 to 5 percent of the energy sector's total annual output. Across 64 modeled scenarios, researchers found net carbon pollution rose in every case where AI boosted fossil fuel productivity alongside renewables.
