NHS Organ Donation Enters First-Ever Emergency Mode as Donors Plummet

NHS Blood and Transplant has launched its first-ever urgent response plan after organ donations fell by 11% compared to the same period last year, calling it "one of the most challenging periods for organ donation in over a decade." Between 1 April and 13 September 2026, there were just 591 deceased organ donors — down from 664 in the same window the year before — leaving the UK transplant system in a state the agency has never formally declared before.
