Super El Niño’s Uneven Impacts—and Why Forecasting Research Matters
A powerful El Niño is bringing very different risks to different places, from California’s coast to Indonesia’s forests. That unevenness makes research and local forecasting more important—not less.

The Signal
A single climate pattern is producing wildly different postcards from around the world: rare rain has awakened Chile’s Atacama Desert, while El Niño-driven fires are putting Indonesia’s orangutans at risk. Meanwhile, researchers warn that an ocean wave could raise sea levels along California’s coast. The striking point isn’t simply that this El Niño is strong. It’s that “strong” does not mean “the same everywhere.”
